Introduction to Rag Rugging

  • Langholm Social Club Laird's Entry Langholm, Scotland, DG13 United Kingdom (map)

Rag Rugging is an ancient craft , using fabrics and yarns plus other recycled materials to create a unique piece of art that will last a last a lifetime.

Fabric will be provided but if you would like to use something specific like the clothes from loved ones, something that invokes memories , this will make the piece extra special, a story woven with the materials.

You can add adornments , buttons , jewellery, silk & metallic yarns , shells etc for 3D designs - all you need is a little imagination.

You will start with a foundation cloth, we will use hessian but you can also use burlap, monks cloth or linen as a base. Fabrics will then be cut into strips or small squares depending on what type of rag rugging you wish to try. You will then decide on a design and lightly draw it onto to the hessian.
